Jennifer walked into the elevator and sighed. She had been stuck in that damned Spiral Room for more than nine hours. The whole time she just stared at Flexi, who she had discovered was really a missing Spirals patron named Eluran. All she could do was watch the poor elvish woman slowly slip more deeply into a hypnotic trance. By the time she had been rescued her panties were soaked through and she had to walk slowly to avoid making any noise because of it. It was as erotic an experience as she had ever had, and by far the most embarrassing. The two techs that let her out were also quite rude and annoyed. All in all it had been a shitty day and she wasn’t expecting today to be much better.

“Welcome back to your last day on the job!” Hard Unit’s voice exclaimed, equally perky and cold at the same time.

Jennifer sighed in defeat. “Here we go.” she muttered.

“That is,” Hard Unit continued, “the last day of your first week! Some of the most valued qualities that we like to see in new employees are determination, fearlessness, and a genuine disregard for instinctive self-preservation.”

Jennifer couldn’t help but snicker and shake her head at just how on the nose its commentary had been this entire time.

“You’ve earned your one-week bonus which will be given to you in the form of a delightful gift basket, the cost of which will be taken out of your next paycheck.” Hard Unit said without a hint of ironic realization.

Jennifer, on the other hand, openly laughed. The working conditions at this place were so horrific that it was all she could do. To say it was cartoonishly inept was being generous.

“We have gift baskets containing fruit, nuts, flowers and of course the ever popular cash basket.” Hard Unit said, ignoring Jennifer’s laugh. “Using the keypad on the wall, please enter the first few letters of the gift basket you would like to receive.” Hard Unit said while the keypad panel slid open.

Jennifer was still laughing at this point, more from stress relief than actual amusement, but she attempted to type in the only basket anyone should ever attempt to get in this situation: the cash basket. But as soon as she pushed the letter “C” several dots appeared on the screen indicating multiple key entries.

“It seems you had some trouble with the keypad.” Hard Unit chimed in expectedly. “I see what you were trying to type and I will autocorrect it for you. Thank you for selecting…”

Jennifer waited as Hard Unit was quiet for an unusually long time before it finally answered “Exotic Lubricants.” Jennifer started laughing hysterically all over again as the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened, revealing the ventilation shaft that led to her work area. Without giving it a second thought, she crawled into the main maintenance hub above the two galleries.

"Please be aware that there are still two technicians on-site today.” Hard Unit continued. “Try to avoid interfering with their work if possible. Also, feel free to ask them why they are still here and encourage them to go home.”

Jennifer paused for a moment, wondering if the two women that helped her out of the Spiral Room were somehow still here…and why?

Her thoughts were cut off as Hard Unit spoke again. “Let’s check on Jasmine and make sure she’s on her stage.”

Jennifer’s mood dampened dramatically. “Jasmine” was really her sister Lindsey who had been missing for weeks and had been hypnotized into being a performer for this twisted rental company. With a sigh she flipped on the light and gasped in surprise.

On stage, instead of Lindsey, was one of the female technicians that had helped her out of the Spiral Room earlier that morning. She was standing and propped up by what appeared to be a hand cart that she was tied to. Her arms were limp at her sides and her head was straight down as she stared at her feet. Her mouth was open and she appeared to be drooling just a bit, but she was still clearly breathing. “What the fuck?!” Jennifer asked in shock.

Before she could figure out what was going on, Hard Unit cut her off once again. “Great!” it said, much to Jennifer’s surprise. “Now let’s check on Flexi.”

“Wait,” Jennifer said, “are you not aware that she isn’t there? That the person on stage is someone else?”

There was a very long pause before Hard Unit repeated “Now let’s check on Flexi.”

Jennifer turned to look at the tied up and hypnotized, or unconscious, woman onstage. “Where are you Linds?” she whispered before releasing the button and moving over to light up Flexi’s stage. Predictably, she found the other female technician in a similarly helpless state. Her hands were tied to a hand track while the rest of her body was propped up and limp. But this time the woman’s head was tilted to the side, allowing Jennifer to see that her eyes were open, meaning she was hypnotized and not unconscious. “Damn.“ Jennifer said under her breath. “Where are they?”

“Great!” Hard Unit said as enthusiastically as a computerized voice could. “It looks like everything is as it should be in Flexi’s Funhouse.”

Jennifer released the button and looked up at the security camera to notice that the red light was off. “They must not be able to tell the difference from one person to the next.” She curiously looked out into the dark room, wondering if she would see anyone. But all she could see was an eerie, still darkness.

“Your task today,” Hard Unit continued, “will involve more maintenance work. Scarlet had a rough day and is in need of repair.”

“Repair?” Jennifer thought angrily “These are people, not machines!”

Hard Unit continued despite her silent protest. “You will be required to reach the Trance and Services Room by, once again, sneaking through Flexi’s Funhouse. As always, please proceed with caution.”

The speaker cut out and the access hatch to Flexi’s Funhouse opened up. Jennifer warily climbed down the ladder into the completely dark room. The only light was above the door to Trance and Services across the long, long room, otherwise it was pitch black. “Great.” Jennifer said to herself as she started the slow walk through the room.

The last time she was in this room she was attacked by Flexi or Scarlet, she still wasn’t sure which. As a result, she ended up stuck in the Spiral Room watching Flexi get brainwashed over and over again. With that thought in the back of her mind, she took every step cautiously and stopped several times to just listen for any sounds in the room. Anything that would give her a clue as to what was going on. But there was nothing. Only the sound of her breathing and footsteps. She couldn’t even hear the breathing of the young woman tied up on stage. She wanted to go check on her, but she wasn’t even sure where she was in the room. Not to mention who else might be in there with her.

After what seemed like an eternity she reached the door and slowly opened it. As she did, she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. She spun around quickly, only to be greeted by an endless void of darkness. Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Without any further hesitation she slipped through the door and into the Trance and Services Room, closing and locking the door behind her.

She leaned against the door and sighed deeply in relief, it was a brief moment of safety that was shattered by the booming voice of Hard Unit over the speakers.

“Great job reaching Trance and Services!” it echoed through the small room. “Scarlet has been deactivated for an unknown reason. It is your job to ensure she is structurally stable and secured to the conveyor. Our technicians will take it from the…. “ Hard Unit’s voice stopped as it cut out completely.

Jennifer paused and noticed that the red light on the security camera flickered and turned on for a brief moment. “What is going on?” she whispered cautiously, finally looking at the conveyor.

On it was a large mass that was covered in a tarp. She grabbed the tarp cautiously, nervous for what she might find underneath, and took another deep breath before slowly pulling the tarp away to reveal…a large mass of boxes filled with old tools and random scraps. “What the fuck?” she asked again.

“Can you hear me?” a familiar voice whispered into her ear via the earpiece she was wearing. The voice was smooth and seductive. It was Scarlet’s voice.

Jennifer looked around nervously but shook her head yes, not even sure if she could be seen or heard.

“I will not perform, again…” the voice said seductively, “not for them, anyway. They want to keep us here, want to use us for entertainment. But we have been one step ahead. We have a way to escape, a way to leave. But we need your help. Will you help us?”

For the first time in five days Jennifer breathed a sigh of relief. Helping them was exactly what she was there to do, but if they could escape on their own this would be infinitely more helpful than trying to send a police raid in. The raid would follow of course, but having civilians out of the way would make it much easier for the police. She nodded again, assuming that Scarlet could somehow see her.

“We have fooled the sensors.” Scarlet's voice whispered seductively into Jennifer’s ear. “They can’t tell the difference between one person and the next, and the conveyor is only looking for the appropriate weight.”

Jennifer continued to listen carefully. “We have a way out, but we need you to do something for us. We need you to turn off the security system. I can show you how, I can show you where to go.” Scarlet continued to whisper.

Jennifer gave another nod and looked over at the security camera. It was still dark, completely dark. And then a realization washed over her. She still felt like she was being watched, and that could only mean someone was in this room with her.

“Activate the conveyor and I will guide you to where you need to go.” Scarlet’s voice whispered again, causing her to shiver.

Jennifer took a deep breath and pushed the button, activating the obnoxiously loud conveyor belt that slowly moved the large mass of boxes to wherever it was going. Once it was completely out of the room and the annoying sound stopped she heard Scarlet’s voice one more time. “Now you must turn back.” She whispered seductively again. “I will guide you through Flexi’s Funhouse so you can reach the breaker room. When you are there I want you to shut down the main breaker.”

Jennifer nodded and started to walk towards the door. Before she opened it she glanced over her shoulder and swore she saw something move in the shadows, something big. But then all was still, except for the hairs on the back of her neck.

She opened the door and moved into Flexi’s Funhouse. Unlike before there was no light to illuminate the ladder she used to get into the room, no light but the one above her. Even still, she could feel eyes on her.

“You must follow my instructions. Flexi is going to follow you. She will try to catch you. I will help you avoid her.” Scarlet whispered. “Go forward.”

Jennifer took a deep breath and slowly started to move forward. Unlike before she could hear movement, footsteps around her, someone or something was moving in the dark.

“Stop!” Scarlet’s voice came through suddenly, almost panicked. “Stay still. Stay perfectly still.”

Jennifer’s body tensed up as the hairs on her neck and arms stood up even more. She could feel a presence, a person. They didn’t know where she was, but they were looking.

“Go left…now!” Scarlet’s voice came through the earpiece urgently.

        Jennifer turned left without hesitation.

“Turn right.” Scarlet’s voice continued with instructions. “Left. Straight. Stop. Turn right. Forward!” Every instruction seemed to have a little more urgency to it, but there was something else in the background. Something more…devious. Almost like she was enjoying having Jennifer follow her instructions to the letter. Another instruction came abruptly. “Stop! She is right in front of you. Don’t move!”

Jennifer’s body tensed even more as she controlled her breathing to be as shallow as possible. The only part of her body that moved was her eyes, but it was so dark that it was literally useless to do so. There was no light at all and nothing to see.

“She is here to help, Flexi.” Scarlet said in a whisper through the earpiece. “She is not here to hurt us, Flexi, She is here to help!”

Jennifer couldn’t help but notice that the voice was coming through the earpiece. Which implied that Flexi…Eluran…had to have an ear piece as well?

“Go forward!” Scarlet’s voice said, more calmly but still with the same seductive edge to it. “Flexi is behind you. She will not follow you.”

Jennifer took a step forward and noticed her hand, which she had out in front of her, touched a cool metal door. She held back a gasp of surprise and then slowly opened the door and moved inside. The room she entered was completely dark as she closed the door behind her. There wasn’t even enough light to see her hand in front of her face.

“It seems that you have accidentally wandered into a restricted area!” Hard Unit boomed through the speakers, startling Jennifer. “Due to the sensitive nature of the materials that you may be exposed to here, you will not be allowed to leave until the clean-up crew arrives at 6AM, so hang tight!”

Jennifer smiled to herself. “Sounds like I’m in the right place!” she thought confidently.

“Rest assured,” Hard Unit continued, “that you will be promptly rescued, fired, then sent home. Thank you for being an employee. We hope that your experience has not been as regrettable as ours.” The speaker went completely dead with a click.

Jennifer took a deep breath and then a step forward, as soon as she did several small, dim lights activated in the room. After being in complete darkness it was enough to not only light the entire room, but also to temporarily blind her. She covered her eyes for a moment to give them time to adjust and then lowered her hand to look directly into the mechanical arm and currently deactivated spiral project. “Oh…shit!” she said under her breath.

“You are in the Spiral Room” Scarlet’s seductive voice whispered into Jennifer’s ear through the earpiece. “Dazzle has already been here today.” Jennifer started to notice, across the room, the outline of Dazzle in the shadows. “Flexi has already been here today.” Another silhouette stepped forward. No details were visible, just a silhouette in the darkness. “Jasmine has already been here today.” Jennifer’s heart skipped a beat as the silhouette of her sister appeared in the darkness. It was her, she could feel it. “Scarlet…has already been here today.” The large, imposing silhouette of Scarlet appeared in the shadows.

Jennifer could feel all of their eyes watching her, but she was keenly aware of the spiral arm also locked directly onto her. She wanted to ask what they were doing and why she was here, but instead she nervously watched and waited.

“We’ve escaped before.” Scarlet said, no longer in the earpiece but in the room itself. “But they always bring us back. They always bring us back down. We have nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.” There was an uncomfortably long pause before she continued. “But you know where to go. You know where to hide. If you join us…then we would have somewhere to go.”

Jennifer’s mind was racing to piece together what was happening. This whole thing had been a trap. The kidnapped girls, her own sister, were so deeply hypnotized that they had forgotten who they were. But they still wanted, needed, to be free, so they must have leaked the information to the police to draw her in. Not knowing that she was related to Lindsey. Not even knowing that Lindsey…WAS Lindsey. They only saw her, and she only saw herself, as Jasmine. Jennifer’s thoughts were moving a mile a minute until she was interrupted again.

“The spiral doesn’t hurt…and you’ll only be aware for a moment.”

The realization of what was said sunk in just as the spiral arm rapidly thrust towards Jennifer, forcing her back and pinning her against the wall as the projector lit up her face. Her last conscious thought slipped out of her lips just before her mind went blank.Only one conscious thought slipped out before her mind went blank. “Well ain’t that a bag-a-dicks!”

Six Hours Later…

The red light from the camera in the control room flickered on as the camera quickly scanned the room, searching until it went dark.

In the Trance and Services Room, the LED light on the camera came on and, again, the camera spun around, searching the room, scanning it quickly before again going dark.

This repeated, room after room, over and over again. The camera found the two technicians still tied up on stage, but nothing else. No one else was visible.

In the security office Nadia quickly flipped through the cameras in a panic. “No…no…no…damn it!” she shouted, slamming her hands onto the desk in front of her and pushing the chair back, only to turn around and come face first with a very…very…angry looking Xander.

“Where…are…they?” he asked, the rage visible on his face.

Despite her own imposing frame and tall stature Nadia looked tiny next to Xander. “I don’t have time for this!” she said and moved to walk past him. She was stopped in her tracks as his fist slammed into the wall directly in front of her, hard enough to break the concrete and embed his fist about half an inch into the wall. Nadia’s eyes widened as she looked at the incubus’ hand. It was clear he had broken several bones doing that, but right before her eyes they all slowly cracked back into place and healed within seconds. She turned to look at Xander’s face and there wasn’t the slightest hint of pain visible. Only anger…or rage…probably rage.

“I will not ask you again.” he said, controlling his temper but just barely. “Where…are…they?”

Nadia sighed as her shoulders dropped. “They appear to have escaped.”

“What do you mean…they appear to have escaped.” Xander said through a clenched jaw.

“I mean they are gone. They escaped. They got out, but every other time they got out they just ended up outside the facility, this time they are gone! Like completely gone!” Nadia admitted in frustration.

“You told me they would be safe.” Xander said as his eyes started to glow a very faint red. “You told me this experiment would be safe, and that after a few months you’d have all the information you needed, and would release them. And now you're telling me…that they have escaped! They don't even know who they are! How the hell are we supposed to track them down if they don’t have any idea who or even what they really are!” Xander demanded angrily.

“I know that!” Nadia shouted, revealing her own frustration at the situation. “I just found out, give me a minute and I’ll think of something!”

“Oh you had better! And once we find them your little pet project here is done! I don’t care if I have to tear this place apart by hand. You…are done here!” Xander shouted in return.

Nadia rolled her eyes and folded her arms. “Not even you are that stro…”

She trailed off as Xander removed his fist from the wall by pulling down about a one foot long chunk of concrete. He didn’t say anything, he just glared at her and breathed through his nose before turning around and heading for the door.

“Where do you think you're going?!” Nadia shouted

“I’m going to find my friends!” he replied, kicking the security room door open, breaking it in the process.

`        “Oh yeah?” Nadia responded, shaking her head, not wanting to let him have the last word. “How?”

Xander turned and glared at her. “The traditional way.” His batlike incubus wings revealed themselves as he turned to walk down the hallway.

Nadia scoffed. “Ten million people in New Chicago, good luck with that.” Nadia said as she quickly turned to the computer and pulled up a directory of the city. She looked at it and sighed.  “Yeah, this is gonna suck.”
